Senior Park Needs Clear Label

To the Editor:
I think a Senior Park at John Jay Park is a very nice idea (“At John Jay Park, You Must Be This Old To Enter,” July 15). However, a comment in the story about the name of the park containing “nothing that says seniors or older people” caught my eye and got me to thinking.
You see, there has to be a clear sign about who the park is intended for or otherwise you will have all kinds of clueless people going in there.
For example, there is a tiny section of Tudor City Park designated for babies and toddlers. It’s gated off and has a toddler-friendly jungle gym (as opposed to a taller jungle gym for bigger kids located across the way in another section of the park). There is a sign of “park rules” on the gate to the toddler section clearly saying “no adults allowed without the company of children” (perhaps to discourage bums or pedophiles from hanging out there).
Instead, there is a non-stop influx of adults coming in with their lunches and gabbing on their cell phones during the afternoon. Clearly, they don’t even notice the sign with the park rules or the toddler jungle gym and babies waddling around.
You have to actually open a gate to access the toddler section. I really don’t get how some adults can be so clueless. For those of you who don’t know, Tudor City Park is very large with a beautiful area for adults to sit in. Yet some will choose to sit in the toddler-only section.
