Hungry Customer

A loud, irate customer at a 7-Eleven store on 1594 York Ave. and East 84th Street was arrested Aug. 18 after biting an employee. The 40-year-old Queens employee told police Melissa Hennessy, 36, was being disorderly in his store at 2:55 a.m., causing “fear and alarm.” He told police that Hennessy bit him in the arm hard enough to break skin.

Two Motorcycles Stolen

Two more motorcycles were taken from their parking spots on the East Side. A 2010 red Honda motorcycle parked on 583 Park Ave. and East 63rd Street was reported stolen Aug. 18. The owner, a 47-year-old Bronx man, was at work during the theft. An employee at the nearby Christian Science Church told the owner that someone hopped on the motorcycle, somehow started it and drove away north on Park Avenue.

The second theft happened a day later, Aug. 19, in front of 605 Park Ave. The 39-year-old Queens man parked his black 2007 Suzuki motorcycle at 9 a.m. When he returned at 4 p.m., his motorcycle was gone.

Shoplifter Busted

A 50-year-old man was arrested for robbery Aug. 19 at the 125 E. 86th St. and Lexington Avenue Duane Reade. At 1:36 p.m., an employee noticed Keith Hembrick trying to steal a $4 can of Red Bull energy drink and a $4 cake. Hembrick tried to leave and the employee tried to stop him. The arresting officers found Hembrick wrestling with the 25-year-old Duane Reade employee. The employee got a laceration on his right arm and a swollen lip.

Going Topless?

Women shouldn’t give up the mystique and power of their breasts

By Susan Braudy

Let me tell you why the accelerating—and alarming—trend that has women baring their breasts in public places other than locker rooms may turn out to be bad for us. Up until very recently, most women wore transparent fabric that beguiled, teased and almost showed a woman’s breasts.

I see this as smarter than going topless. Read more

Harsher Penalties in Traffic Crimes

There must be zero tolerance in hit-and-runs like the one that killed Michael Ward

By Bette Dewing

“We need as much to be reminded as informed,” Dr. Samuel Johnson so rightly opined.

An August 5 Our Town letter about the death of Michael Ward, who was killed in a hit-and-run on the East Side, needs repeated informing of the desperate—but slighted—need to prevent what we need to call traffic tragedies, not accidents. Read more

Senior Park Support

To The Editor:

To demonstrate the far-reaching enthusiasm generated by the concept of a new Senior Site incorporated in John Jay Park, Sister Catherine—a former New Yorker—now writes to us from California:

“I love the idea of a park for the elderly. To have older people feel that they have a safe place to go—and one that offers some projects that seniors will enjoy—delights my heart. Hooray for Councilmember Jessica Lappin, who is seeking financing for the park. It suggests that she will be ‘watching it’ to see that all is well. This humanizes a city in which officials care about people they are elected to serve. And kudos to Betty Cooper Wallerstein, the East 79th Street Neighborhood Association and Community Board 8 for giving life to this project! Good luck to all. Catherine McMahon, RSCJ”
We couldn’t agree more, Sister Catherine!

Colorful History

To The Editor:

Can we ever have (“Uncovering Forgotten New York,” Aug. 5) too many historians? Never! Especially when they so eloquently bring our fascinating local history back to life. Coney Island’s “Dreamland,” the Triangle Shirtwaist fire—almost everyone knows a little about these, but it’s people like Kevin Baker filling in the details and revealing the back story that makes it play like a newsreel. Thanks for introducing us to him.
