Saujani Launches Congress Campaign

February 4, 2010

In the back of a packed East Village coffee shop, about five miles away from Rep. Carolyn Maloney’s Upper East Side base, Reshma Saujani kicked off her campaign to unseat the nine-term incumbent.

Saujani, 34, held the event at Everyman Espresso, across the street from an NYU career development center on East 13th Street, between Third and Fourth avenues. Standing on a bench to get a better view of the caffeinated young urban professionals who gathered to support her, Saujani spoke about her recent conversations with district voters. [Read more]

Council Promotions

January 28, 2010

The East Side’s two Council members, Jessica Lappin and Dan Garodnick, got a bump in status—and pay, for Lappin—in this year’s Council class.

Both Council members will chair full committees for the first time. The position comes with a $10,000 stipend—known in political parlance as a “lulu”—on top of a $112,500 base salary for all Council members. Garodnick, however, is voluntarily forgoing his stipend. [Read more]

Cohen released a statement citing professional and personal reasons that prevented him from mounting a successful campaign.

“Giving the people of this district anything less than a fully committed alternative to the status quo would be wrong,” he wrote in an e-mail. [Read more]

Decision ‘09: Republican Challengers

October 23, 2009

Your mailbox may not be as full of campaign “literature” as it was prior to the primary election, but there are still a number of candidates looking to court voters ahead of the Nov. 3 general election. Race to the Run-off

September 23, 2009

Just a handful of Democratic voters will likely choose the city’s next comptroller and public advocate, in what is expected to be a very low-turnout run-off on Sept. 29. On primary day, Sept. 15, only 11 percent of the city’s voters bothered to come out. The races for public advocate and comptroller were the nail-biters of the day, with no candidate broaching the 40 percent mark needed to avoid a run-off. And in a city where registered Democrats outnumber Republicans by a large margin, the winners of these two contests next Tuesday will likely cruise to an easy victory in November. [Read more]
