Shelter Bill Passes – What’s Next?

Last week, after our story on animal shelter reform debates, the city council passed Intro 655, the bill that will infuse Animal Care & Control with more money and expanded services but will also negate the city’s obligations to build shelters in every borough. We anticipate the debate over shelter reform to continue, however, especially as the mayor’s race heats up, and we want to know what our readers think of the potential remedies. What is Community Board 8?

Community Board 8 encompasses the area from East 59th to East 96th streets from Central Park to the East River. Community boards have 50 unpaid members, who vote on issues like land use, liquor licenses and landmarking in an advisory capacity. All board members are appointed by the borough president to two-year terms, but half of them are recommended by local city council members. For Board 8, City Council Member Jessica Lappin recommends 15 of the members and Council Member Dan Garodnick recommends 10.

Abortion Foes Fail to Kill Lappin Bill

Despite strong opposition by anti-abortion centers, bill is born into law

The City Council voted March 2 in favor of a bill that would require so-called Crisis Pregnancy Centers to be more transparent about the services that it provides.

East Side Council Member Jessica Lappin penned the legislation that would require the centers to put signs in their waiting rooms or entrances stating that they don’t provide contraceptives, referrals or abortions.

Lappin issues SBS report card

New bus service a step up but needs improvement

If the Select Bus Service were a high school student it might be told to go back to its room and study some more.

Council Member Jessica Lappin issued her first report card Feb. 7 on how the SBS has performed since it launched in October, giving it an overall grade of B-. The bus service was created to cut down on travel time from uptown to downtown along First Avenue, providing specially designated bus lanes for riders to travel in. It’s also supposed to speed travel by allowing riders to pay their fares in advance at off-board payment machines.

EAST SIDE CHILDREN’S ART SHOW

Young artists between 3 and 18 years old can submit a piece to Council Member Jessica Lappin’s fifth annual East Side Children’s Art Show.

The pieces will be displayed at a special exhibition at Sotheby’s Dec. 13. Entries must include name, age, school, address, phone number and the piece’s title.
