Albany Tax Deal: A Start, But Far From Done

In another whirlwind session in Albany, Gov. Andrew Cuomo pushed through a new tax plan that will generate $1.5 billion in much needed additional revenue for the state. I supported the plan because that revenue will make it easier to balance the budget without devastating cuts to education, health care and social services, and because it creates a more progressive tax structure than we would have if we did nothing. But there is also plenty to be critical of, both in terms of the minimal progressive reform to our tax structure and the record-breaking 26 minutes the Legislature and public had to review the contents of the package. Senior Resource Fair
State Senator Liz Krueger is hosting the Fifth Annual Senior Resource Fair this Thursday, November 3, from 1:30 – 4:30 p.m. at Temple Emanu-El, One East 65th Street (at Fifth Avenue). The free event will feature over 50 exhibitors providing information for older adults, as well as refreshments and free resources guides. The event is designed to help make seniors aware of all the local resources available to them, from city programs to free and reduced price cultural offerings to the best ways to stay healthy. Pols, Tenants Say Landlord Creates Unsafe Conditions
Local politicians and tenants rallied on Aug. 5 against a landlord they claim has created unsafe living conditions at 350 East 52nd Street.

Rally for Rent Reform
State Senator Liz Krueger joined elected representatives from around the five boroughs today on the steps of City Hall, calling for Governor Cuomo to address rent reform in the state budget. The rally, lead by State Senator Adriano Espaillat, brought officials, including Council Member Dan Garodnick, and community advocate groups together in support of new state legislation that will strengthen existing rent regulation laws. Current rent regulation laws are set to expire on June 15, 2011, but the rally focused on renewing these laws much earlier to avoid confusion and chaos for the residents of over one million rent-stabilized units in New York City. Add to that the fact that New Yorkers are often racing to get from one destination to another, and you are faced with the reality that the streets of New York can be dangerous for pedestrians and bicyclists.
