ITALIAN RESTAURANT CLOSES FOR SUBWAY

After 16 years of serving Upper East Siders, Da Filippo Restaurant closed its doors July 3. The restaurant, on 1315 Second Ave. and East 69th Street, opened in May 1994. The MTA purchased the building and is planning to tear it down.

The owner of Da Filippo, says that he would consider reopening the restaurant at another location, but has not decided on a neighborhood yet.

Late Night Train Attack

A 32-year-old Bronx man was attacked on a northbound 4 train at the Lexington Avenue and East 77th Street station June 30 at 3 a.m. Police said a man walked onto the train yelling and screaming and threw a bottle of water at the victim’s face then punched him. The Bronx man got off the train at the Lexington Avenue East 110th Street train stop, where police arrived.

Subway Assault

A woman was assaulted on a northbound No. 6 train near the East 86th Street stop, at Lexington Avenue. Police said that May 15 at 5:10 p.m., the 56-year-old Bronx woman saw two men assaulting another woman on the train. When she intervened, one of the attackers, 61-year-old George Richards, allegedly punched her in the face. Richards was arrested and charged with assault.

In Wake of Subway Stabbing, Concerns About Crime on Public Transit

In a blast from the not-so-fondly-remembered past, violent gang activity spilled out of Central Park into Manhattan subway stations last week, with one of the teens involved in the altercation getting stabbed.

According to the New York Post, the trouble began when one gang confronted another in Central Park. One group fled, heading down into the subway station at West 72nd Street and Central Park West and jumping the turnstiles. Read more

MTA Prepares To Take Properties Via Eminent Domain

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority is moving to take private property, both temporarily and permanently, to continue construction on the first phase of the Second Avenue subway.

Notices were sent March 26 to various properties’ owners and residents along Second Avenue from the East 60s to the East 80s, and around Lexington Avenue and East 63rd Street, where the T line will connect with the F train. Read more

Subway Construction Updates

Sam Schwartz engineering recently released a schedule for Second Avenue subway construction through May 10.

Work surrounding the 96th Street Station includes the restoration of pavement and sidewalks between East 99th and 100th streets, starting May 11. Between East 97th and 99th streets, workers will be installing a 12-inch water main and excavating and installing a 30-inch gas main and splice boxes. Traffic will switch to the north side of East 97th Street to accommodate a gas main crossing. The excavation of a storm drain and backfilling of a sewer trench is also scheduled. Read more

FAIRWAY UNLOADS SUBWAY CONSTRUCTION CONCERNS

Fairway may be eying a new Upper East Side location, but the gourmet food market is already concerned about Second Avenue Subway construction.

Fairway is considering opening an outpost at 240 E. 86th St., between Second and Third avenues, an area that will soon see heavy subway construction that would block truck loading and unloading zones.

As crews take over Second Avenue, more businesses will be using the 220-foot East 86th Street truck zone. Paid commercial trucks can park in the zone Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. Read more

Displaced Tenants Concerned With Cracks, Vibrations

Tenants from six Second Avenue buildings, who will be relocated because of construction, will have their apartments inspected again after voicing
safety concerns.

About 50 tenants from 1873 and 1821-29 Second Ave. met April 12 with officials from the Metropolitan Transportation Authority and Department of Buildings at the Stanley Isaacs Center, on East 93rd Street. The topic was relocation plans for 28 people in 60 apartments, scheduled for this summer. Read more

Three Lanes to Close on 2nd Ave. for Subway Equipment Delivery

The machine that will make the Second Avenue subway a reality will be assembled over the next few weeks, though up to three lanes of traffic on Second Avenue will need to be closed to accommodate delivery.

Starting April 19, the 22-foot tunnel boring machine and 18 double-deck rail cars holding back-up equipment will be delivered to the construction site. Locomotives to haul material into the tunnel and rail cars for removal of excavated material will also be delivered. Read more
