A Glimpse of the Past

The streets of the Upper East Side, especially near the Metropolitan Museum of Art, sometimes seems like a time warp. An imaginative wanderer can almost feel what it was like when the streets were gas lit and the city’s residents traveled about town in horse-drawn carriages. Many of the mansions of New York’s Gilded Age still stand - with elaborate, stately and intricate entryways, framed with sculptural details, delicate filigrees and imposing transom windows above the doors.
