Moving on up–Judge Suzanne Adams has been appointed as the new Administrative Judge to oversee the Manhattan Supreme Court, Civil Term. It was announced by Chief Administrative Judge Joseph A. Zayas and First Deputy Chief for New York County Supreme Court Norman St. George. She’s replacing Manhattan Administrative Judge Adam Silvera to Deputy Chief Chief Administrative judge for the New York City Courts. Her appointment, also reported in the New York Law Journal by Emily Saul, takes effect on Nov. 4.

I reached out to Judge Adams for a comment on her designation. Here is what she said: “For me being a judge is about serving the justice needs of the people and ensuring the fair, timely resolution of all matters before the Court. The New York County Supreme Court’s Civil Term is one of the busiest civil courts in the country, perhaps the world, handling thousands of cases annually, ranging from divorces to business litigation to working with the judicial leadership and the Court’s judges, nonjudicial staff and justice partners, I pledge to provide the most effective, efficient justice possible. But as my mentors taught, and as I’ve always believed, we’re equally committed to getting at the underlying reasons why people come to court and finding the most meaningful, sustainable solutions. I’m honored to carry on this important work in my new position as Administrative Judge.”

Judge Adams hails from the Upper East Side/Yorkville. And Our Town has written about her judicial campaigns back to the days when she was elected to New York City Civil Court in NY County in 2017 and assigned to NY County’s criminal bench before being designated as an acting Supreme Court justice in 2020. Judge Silvera, as I wrote in an earlier column, is a Lower East Side resident.

Author, Author– Yorkville resident Kenneth Craddock has a new book out, “Secrets of a Competent President,” published by Amazon ($3.99 ebook, $17.95 paperback). It covers the years from John F. Kennedy v Richard Nixon in 1960 through the Donald Trump vs. Kamala Harris race and what it will mean into 2025. You may think you’ve read it all or heard it all, but Craddock’s research gives it perspective and vision and has led him down some “unique paths quite different from the usual history directions.”

One of his goals, he says, was to find the key or keys to competence before the vote and “three items emerged in the campaigns which would signal on-the-job competence.” Briefly, here goes: First, the ability to plan ahead 20 years. Second is leadership. The ability to get elected and unite the people against enemies. Third criterion is “civic virtue.” The ability to place the country’s welfare above self-interest. Craddock’s book includes the years of the current election. Can be ordered from amazon.com .

He’s been involved in the life of Yorkville going back to the 70s and 80s. He has an M.P.A. from Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government and has a masters degreee in U.S. history from Columbia. The book, not surprisingly since it is an imprint of Amazon Books, can be ordered from amazon.com .

Yorkville eats–Heidelberg Restaurant in Yorkville has been around over a hundred years and is one of the oldest family-run German restaurants in the United States, dating back to a time when Yorkville was a vibrant German neighborhood. It retains an old-world atmosphere and is definitely a step into the olden days. On a recent Thursday evening the bar and restaurant were bustling with locals, newcomers, young, old, all laughing and talking as they dined on German favorites–weiner schnitzel, spatzle, bratwurst, beer. Quiet, it wasn’t. Just talk louder. Go. It’s a lively and fun, and an old/new world experience. Located on 2nd Ave between E. 85th/ E. 86th Sts. Seating indoors and street-side. Open 7 days a week.
